Dear Parents,
The students and staff of Lord Aylmer will once again be participating in the Terry Fox School Run, which continues the legacy of the Marathon of Hope and fundraising efforts to search for better treatments and cures for cancer. With the ongoing public health concerns, we will follow last year’s model for our event, with individual classes participating in a walk or run at some point during the last week of September and/or first week of October.
Over the next two weeks, your child will learn more about one of Canada’s heroes, Terry Fox. As you know, this young man developed bone cancer, and then, with the use of an artificial leg, decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry’s determination has now inspired generations of Canadians and others around the world, with over $800 million raised in his name so far. Millions of students participate across Canada and we are proud to be a part of that, raising from $5000 – $8000 each year (just $10-$15 per student) for the Terry Fox Foundation to further the cause of cancer research. With your help, we hope to continue that level of contribution this year.
This year’s fundraising campaign will be held online only due to the current situation.
How to donate:
Click this link: Lord Aylmer Terry Fox Fundraising Page to make a donation. It’s fast, easy and donors get a receipt immediately by email. Alternately, you may also want to set up a fundraising page for your child by clicking the “STUDENTS/CLASSROOMS: SET UP A PAGE” link. Their page will connect automatically to our school’s fundraising page and they’ll receive a link to email friends and family to help them reach their fundraising goal.
All students will participate in the event, even if they are unable to collect any pledges. Cycle 2 and 3 students will be walking or running a 2.5km course once or twice over the course of the week, on a safe route along the bicycle path near the school, or on school grounds, with plenty of space for physical distancing measures. They will be supervised by either their homeroom teacher or physical education teacher plus another staff member for these outings. Kindergarten and Cycle 1 students will walk or run a 1km loop on school property at the Jr. Campus. All students will stay with their class group only.
At the beginning of the year, a permission form allowing your child to go off school grounds with appropriate supervision was sent home. If you have already returned that form, no further permission is needed. If you have not returned the walking permission form yet, please do so as soon as possible in order to make this event a bit more special by going off school property for students from grades 3-6.
Unfortunately, we will still not be asking for parent volunteers to join in our class walks and runs this year due to COVID-19 concerns. Of course, we encourage you to show support for your child in their efforts as well as with the fundraising campaign for the Terry Fox Foundation.
