To: Parents of students in Western Québec School Board schools, and Adult and Vocational Training students
From : George Singfield; Director General, Western Quebec School Board
Dear parents and students,
I am writing to you today to provide an update on our situation with regard to the wildfires that have been burning in Northern Québec and Eastern Ontario.
As mentioned previously, our senior administration team is in daily contact with Public Health officials from both the Outaouais and Abitibi-Témiscamingue regions. As of this morning, both regions have confirmed that it is not necessary to close any of our schools. Public Health has also advised that staff and students are permitted to go outside provided the air is not foggy and/or smoky. In the event the air is foggy and/or smoky, students should be restricted to only 10 minutes of outside exposure at a time, and are not to be participating in any type of intense physical activities.
Please keep in mind that because of the size of our school board territory, it is not possible to have one directive that applies to all schools and centres, as climate conditions vary from region to region; therefore the need for individual schools and centres to monitor the weather conditions.
Public Health anticipates that the conditions will continue to improve.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
George Singfield
